The Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the Networks Technologies and Service Platforms group within the Communications section.
Description of PhD project
Communications network latency and deterministic behaviour becomes increasingly important with new applications in the areas of Internet of Things (IoT), front- and backhaul mobile networks, Industry 4.0 and Vehicle communication. In mobile 5G networks the objective is to achieve latency below 1 ms and for Ethernet based applications (e.g. Industrial Ethernet) the objective is to provide deterministic latency and zero packet loss. IEEE has established a working group for Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and the research community is frequently proposing new approaches with different trade-offs between implementation complexity and performance.
It is the goal of this project to develop a framework for evaluation of time critical networking and to propose viable solutions to specific use cases such as IoT, fronthaul networking and Industrial applications. Passive and active monitoring of network performance will be a vital part of the solution, and the project will contribute with
computer simulations and development of test facilities for validation.
The project is closely linked to a national and two international research projects within the area.
The candidate must have a master’s degree in engineering specializing in telecommunication or similar degree. In addition, experience with time sensitive networks, network measurements and software implementation will be seen as an advantage. Good communication skills in English are required.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
