DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. The groups offering the position recently showed the world’s most efficient nonlinear integrated photonics platform by using AlGaAs on insulator which was presented as post-deadline papers at leading conferences (Pu et al. OFC & CLEO US 2015). This material is two-photon absorption free, but for very high powers three-photon absorption will lower the performance of the platform and we are also looking into other materials. We are now seeking a new PhD student for the team who will further optimize and functionalize the platforms by processing new designs including contacting schemes for tuning. The project is part of the centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Facilities at the National cleanroom Danchip (www.danchip.dtu.dk) will be used for the project. Starting date is 1st of August or as soon as possible.
Responsibilities and tasks
The Ph.D. study is directed at design, fabrication and characterization of tuneable non-linear waveguides and devices in different materials aiming at realizing stabilized frequency combs, modulators, filters and possibly new devices. Design is related to both the optical and in some cases electrical waveguides and resonator structures. Cleanroom fabrication is a major part of the position. Together with other students the device quality has to be perfected (e.g. scattering loss from waveguide sidewalls). Contacts should be processed to the devices in ways that do not lower the intrinsic performance of the devices.
The fabrication processes are mostly based on wafer bonding, but also deposition of materials. This is followed by e-beam or DUV patterning, and subsequently dry-etching/lift-off processing before cladding layer deposition.Hybridization with silicon photonics platforms in partner institutions will also be done. Finally, linear and nonlinear and electro-optic characterization of the devices will be carried out by the candidate.
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
