Masters project on - The Neural Control of breathing – Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
Masters project with start Fall 2021 or as agreed.
The main focus of the lab is to understand how breathing rhythm is generated and modulated by the brain. We are using a mix of electrophysiology and imaging to understand the cellular basis of rhythm generation, studying respiratory neurons in organotypic slice cultures from newborn mice.
In this project we are addressing the specific question of how dendrites handle synaptic input to the neurons. Using optogenetics we will measure the spread of current through the dendritic tree to gain a better understanding of how current flow through the neuron during a breathing cycle. The experimental concept works, and quality data have already been obtained.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to push the project further towards completion. We will train you in the advanced techniques to be used in this project, including patch clamp, optogenetics, calcium and voltage imaging.
These are demanding tasks, and we hope to attract a candidate that is not afraid to take on complicated technology and can run experiments independently after an initial intense training period. Since the project already have produced very solid and interesting data we can guarantee a first rate story for a master thesis.
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a BA in the natural sciences.
