The Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, has an opportunity to support a Postdoc position: "Methane production and carbon capture through hydrate swapping" in the framework of a three-year project supported by the Danish Research Council for Technology and Production Sciences.

Description of the project
This project considers the problem of using carbon dioxide to produce the vast resources of natural gas locked up as solid gas hydrates in permafrost and oceanic margin zones. The natural gas hydrates are converted to CO2 hydrates, thereby storing CO2 (the major greenhouse gas) while simultaneously releasing natural gas. This so-called “swapping” process, whereby methane (the major component in natural gas) in the hydrate is replaced by CO2, allows for production of natural gas from hydrate without adversely affecting the stability of the solid hydrate.

The task of the Postdoc
The goal of the specific 1½-year subproject is to perform flooding experiments on model and real hydrate cores to quantify and understand the mechanism of flooding processes to produce gas from the cores. An external stay of a few months duration at KAIST in South Korea will be expected.

Required skills
A PhD degree in chemical or petroleum engineering, other relevant areas;

  • Good writing skills in English;
  • A track record of independent research;
  • Laboratory skills and experience in the area of gas hydrates;

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1½ year.

Further information
The project will be supervised by , with possible co-supervision from other involved researchers at DTU and KAIST.
