Aarhus Universitet (AU)
Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Agroecology programme. The position is available from 1 February 2018 or later.
Targeted fertilization of grass-clover
Research area and project description:
Grassland covers 33% of agricultural land in Europe and 20% in Denmark. Targeted fertilization of grass-clover has significant economic potential for the dairy industry as it combines high productivity and low environmental impact, if the nitrogen supply is adjusted according to the actual clover content. Nonetheless, manure and fertilizers are used irrespective of clover content due to poor ability to assess clover content and lack of knowledge on correlation between fertilizer nitrogen and clover content during the season. The proposed PhD study will focus on nitrogen dynamics in grass-clover mixtures with emphasis on interactions between type of fertilizer and grass/clover nitrogen dynamics using isotope methodology at laboratory and field scale. The study is associated to the project “SmartGrass -Targeted fertilization of grass-clover and grass seed production through implementation of new sensor technology” funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.
Qualifications and specific competences:
Candidates should have a Master’s degree in agronomy, biology, soil science, environmental science or any relevant field of study. Experience in relevant laboratory and field work and a basic knowledge on soil nutrient transformations is requested. A flair for planning and statistical treatment of data is also highly relevant. The candidate should have good command of oral and written English, be able to write scientific publications, be independent, and should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary international academic environment.
Place of Employment and Place of Work:
The PhD will be enrolled in Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST) at Aarhus University, and the place of work will be Research Centre Foulum, Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, Denmark.
