The National Food Institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a PhD position within the research field of bioactive compounds from microalgae. The successful applicant will be based in the research group for Bioactives – analysis and application, Division of Food Technology at DTU Campus Lyngby. One of the focus areas of the research group is optimisation of the content of bioactive compounds in microalgae and extraction of these.
Responsibilities and tasks
The overall purpose of the PhD project is to investigate the effect of cultivation conditions on the biomass content of vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and pigments of selected microalgae and to develop new multi-extraction technologies for the production of high value ingredients (proteins, omega-3 oils, and pigments, vitamins E and D) from these microalgal species. Extraction technologies may include a range of techniques such as centrifugation and different extraction methods e.g. enzymatic, pulsed electrical field, microwave and molecular extraction. The PhD study will thus include different technologies ranging from algal cultivation, harvesting, extraction, fractioning, drying and various chemical analyses. Special focus will be analysis of vitamin D, vitamin E, lipid and protein content, composition of fatty acids, amino acids and pigments. The project will involve collaboration with industry.
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
