iTran is a collaborative project between the FORCE center at Chalmers university in Sweden and the SPOC center at DTU in Denmark addressing the growing challenges of sustainable technology for the future internet. The complementary expertise of the centers allows the iTran project to develop novel and high-level solutions for energy-efficient wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical data transmitter.

The research idea explores integrating optical frequency comb generators realized in silicon nitride (SiN) or aluminum-gallium-arsenide (AlGaAs) materials with a silicon photonic platform. The circuit to be fabricated in silicon photonic technology involves a de-multiplexing/multiplexing stage with an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulation part in-between. The design of the optical circuit will rely on available component libraries supplied by the foundry services but will require the development of an in-depth understanding of the component interplay. Moreover, the targeted specifications of the optical circuits will require novel design strategies in order to integrate the optical layout with electrical control lines driven at radio frequency speeds.

Project description
We are searching for a PhD student who will work on designing integrated optical modulators to be combined with integrated frequency comb sources.

The PhD student will explore designs for merging comb-generators with an integrated bank of data modulators, fabricated in state-of-the-art silicon photonics foundries, allowing for fully integrated light sources and modulators for future WDM systems. In particular, a novel 3D interface will be investigated as a means to effectively couple the frequency tones from the comb generator to the photonic integrated circuit (PIC) bank of modulators. This interface can be realized either by using direct bonding or by using deposition and etching of inversely tapered waveguides or grating couplers and will involve critical process-flow development in the cleanroom at DTU Danchip.

Once the 3D coupler is matured into a robust design, the fabrication will be handed over to a foundry together with the designs for a de-multiplexing/multiplexing stage with an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulation part in-between. The latter part will be based on the existing library of components in the foundries, but novel design strategies for integrating the optical circuit with electrical control lines driven with 40 GHz bandwidth modulation will be developed.

The PhD student is expected to spend time at both of the two alliance partners, and collaborate with project members at both institutions. This is essential to the success of the project and allows the student to benefit from the extensive and complementary competencies available in these two institutions.

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
