Research Assistant in microbiome studies

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Ph.d. & forskning
Storkøbenhavn

Frist 25. maj 2018

The Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology at The National Food Institute (DTU Food) seeks a research assistant to assist the head of Unit, Professor Frank Aarestrup, directly on a number of smaller and larger research projects aimed at investigating the microbiome in various reservoirs.

The research assistant will be affiliated with the Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology, which has the primary task of conducting targeted research with the aim of predicting and preventing infectious diseases in humans and animals, and supporting global detection, surveillance and control. The research group is an EU reference laboratory for antimicrobial resistance and WHO collaborating centre for antimicrobial resistance in foodborne pathogens and genomics. The research combines expertise in conventional and molecular microbiology with epidemiology and bioinformatics.

The Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology is together with several partners worldwide investigating the emergence and transmission of infectious disease agents and interactions between the microbiome and health and disease. More information is available at: www.genomicepidemiology.org, www.globalmicrobialidentifier.org, www.compare-europe.eu).

A large number of investigations have been initiated, including several minor pilot-experiments, which are not sufficient to merit a full PhD or postdoc study. Thus, a scientific assistant capable of ensuring the organization of several minor projects in collaboration with scientists with expertise across several disciplines is needed. The candidate should be willing to hand over responsibility, if the pilot-studies evolve into requiring a full-time person.

The candidate’s main responsibility will be to assist the Head of Unit in executing the ideas and pilot-studies.

Responsibilities and tasks
In relation to our ongoing microbiome research, we have identified a number of minor pilot-studies which do not individually merit a full-time person, and where the expertise from a larger number of individuals in the group is needed. It is not feasible for the Head of Unit to execute all of these projects by himself and an assistant is needed.

  • Your main responsibility will be to assist the Head of Unit to execute a number of minor pilot-studies.
  • You will accomplish this by detailed planning of the studies and keep the various scientists, whose individual expertise is needed, on track.
  • You will communicate research results by presenting data at project meetings, write reports and assist in writing applications and manuscripts for publication.
  • You will engage in the general work carried out by the research group, including discussions and planning of strategies and projects, drafting research grant proposals, etc.
  • If your interest lies here and time allows, you will also be able to plan and conduct independent research studies.
  • The day-to-day work will be performed in close collaboration with other researchers in the Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology and with national and international partners. Collaboration includes active participation in national and international meetings and conferences, sharing of data and results and contribution to joint publications.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master’s degree in life sciences, engineering or equivalent.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is organized and capable of working together with several scientists and technical personnel.
  • Has knowledge about biology and microbiome research.
  • Has documented experience with cross-discipline collaboration.
  • Has international experience and is willing to travel.
  • Is able to work independently and able to plan and carry out complex tasks, while also having the ability to engage constructively and positively in a large, international and cross-disciplinary research group.
  • Has good English communication skills, oral and written.
  • Is ambitious and has a strong drive for obtaining high-quality results.
