PhD scholarship in Super Resolution Ultrasound Imaging

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging (CFU) at the Department of Electrical Engineering from September 2018. It is conducted in collaboration between CFU at DTU Elektro, DTU Nanotech, BK Medical, University of Copenhagen, and the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet).

The project seeks to develop new advanced ultrasound super resolution imaging (SRI) techniques. SRI can increase the fundamental resolution of ultrasound by a factor of 10-100 times using isolation and tracking of micro bubbles injected into the blood stream. The projects develops the processing schemes for isolating the bubbles and for tracking and visualizing them in 2D and 3D. The project also includes performing a range of phantom and animal experiments to develop and refine the SRI algorithms.

The research is conducted in a truly multi-disciplinary environment consisting of the 4 academic partners specializing in advanced ultrasound imaging, silicon CMUT probes, and clinical investigations and the commercial ultrasound manufacturer BK Medical.

Responsibilities and tasks
The main task is to develop suitable ultrasound imaging schemes based on the previous work at CFU on synthetic aperture and vector flow imaging to make bubble isolation, tracking, and visualization. This is integrated in our SRI processing framework and tested on 3D printed soft-tissue phantoms together with DTU Nanotech. The scheme is then implemented on a research scanner jointly developed by BK Medical and used in pre-clinical trials at the University of Copenhagen. The implementation will finally be clinically evaluated in trials conducted together with the Department of Radiology at Rigshospitalet to reveal its efficacy.

Candidates should hold a MSc in engineering, physics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering.

Experience with digital signal processing is desirable. Similarly, knowledge of medical imaging and acoustics will also be beneficial.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
