PhD position on Photonic Crystal Photodetectors for Integrated Photonics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Ph.d. & forskning

Frist 15. juni 2018

The research center NATEC (NAnophotonics for TErabit Communications) is exploring the physics of novel nanophotonic devices and their applications within integrated photonics and optical communications. In particular, novel lasers and modulators based on Fano resonances in a nano-cavity are showing extremely rich physics and promising applications with optical signal processing. The PhD project will focus on experimental investigations of active Fano devices based on photonic crystal structures and low-dimensional active semiconductor materials. This is a novel and promising research topic, leaving ample opportunity for the PhD student to significantly push the state-of-the-art of research in the field. The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration between the Nanophotonic Devices group and the Quantum and Laser Photonics group at the Department of Photonic Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The groups are at the very forefront of international research in their respective fields and will provide a strong platform for the successful execution of the project. There is access to state-of-the-art characterization and fabrication facilities ( The department is highly international and encourages collaborative work and an informal working environment.

Responsibilities and tasks
This PhD position will be part of the NATEC Centre and will include:

  • Design, fabrication and characterization of photonic crystal photodetectors as well as nanolasers and modulators using the same technology.
  • Theoretical studies of the fundamental properties of photonic crystal photodetectors, including quantum noise, bandwidth and the prospects for detection of small photon numbers.

As part of the Danish PhD program, the student will follow a number of PhD courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external research stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations.

Candidates should have a master's degree in physics or electrical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Kresten Yvind, and Professor Jesper Mørk.
