For the operators of electric vehicle fast charges to expand the coverage of their charging network, chargers will have to be placed at even more remote areas where the grid could be weak. A weak grid is characterized by large grid impedance, making the grid react in a sluggish way. This could lead to controller instability if the controller is not designed handle the large grid impedance.
The students should analyze the effect of weak grid on the converter transfer function.
The students could further carry out one of the following tasks
- Online/offline grid impedance estimation
- Make the current controller have a high bandwidth over a wide range of grid impedances.
- Active damping
- Adaptive controller gains
